Writing Poetry How to Write a Poem

Writing poetry is quite a daunting task. It sounds easy at the outset, but when one gets down to it, it becomes more and more complicated. Some of us can go ahead and create a magical flow with words quite easily, while it is a long-winded and onerous task for others. Needless to say, when one contemplates writing poetry, one must be up to the challenge.

There are several things that one must consider while wondering how to write poetry. Here is a list of things to think about that, hopefully, will make the process easier for you.

The Subject:

Commonly known as the Theme of the poem, this is the important starting point and central point of your work. What is the poem all about? What are you trying to get across to the world at large, via your poem? Is it a story, an experience, a description of events, or a description of a place?

An interesting way to take the jump from this point is writing down the words, phrases or sentences that come to your mind when you are thinking about the subject or the theme of your poem. Dont worry if nothing sounds or feels right, just write it down for now.

The Feeling:

A poem, no matter how descriptive it may be, is not to be used to state the obvious. We all know that the grass is green, for example. What you need to express in your poem is what you felt when you saw the green grass. What emotions did it evoke within you? What were you going through at the time and how did seeing the green grass change or enhance your feelings at that moment of time? With your words, you have to convey what you feel or felt. The readers have to understand the depth of what you were going through. A poem is essentially about the emotions of the poet.

A way to get past the barrier of writing about emotions is to take ordinary things from your daily life and write down whatever feeling words come to your mind when you see the object. Such a list will come in handy and is a good way to practice.

The Mood:

How do you want to portray your thoughts, ideas and feelings via this poem? Do you want to make it a serious poem, or a funny one, a sarcastic one or an irreverent one? The mood can often help you convey the feelings more effectively.

Once you have your feeling words in place, you can choose different moods of the poem and try to write a sentence or two that contains the theme and the feeling in these various moods. Which mood do you like the best? Which mood conveys what you feel about the subject more effectively?

The Style:

Choose a style of writing the poem from among several from classical to the modern contemporary styles of writing poetry, there are many to choose from. Pick a style which is easier for you to work with. Most modern poets often use the free verse style of poetry. Although, to the beginner, this style may not have a formal structure and sound easy to write in, look closely at the work of popular free verse poets and you will find a basic form lurking somewhere.

An exercise to try out at this juncture is to write down your thoughts about something or someone in free verse and then trying to see if you can put those lines into another well-known structure or style of writing poetry. Perhaps a few changes here and there and it might do the trick. Try doing that with two or three styles and find one which you are more comfortable with. This process will help you revise your work and find your style at the same time.

The Audience:

Who are you writing for? The audience of the poem can help you choose the language, the style and the words to be used in your piece. Experiment with forms and words to find your unique Voice as a poet.

Read out your poem to a few of your friends, relatives, and neighbors etc who fit in with your description of your target audience. Ask for their feedback and what they felt about the poem. Dont take negative feedback or criticism to heart it is in fact a learning experience all the way. Try and try till you get it just right.

Other Helpful Tips:

It makes sense to study the forms and styles used by poets across the world to become more familiar with structure, format, rhythm, rhyme and meter along with several other elements used in poetry.
A dictionary or a thesaurus is very handy to have. Often, a search for meanings of words can help you take a jump off to another wonderful dimension within your poetry.
Keep a journal, notebook or a diary where you record your thoughts, feelings and experiences, even dreams. You may never know where they may lead you off to.
Attend as many poet / poetry groups as you can. This helps you get your work read and critiqued by other people and can provide you with valuable insights on your work.
And to conclude, (and this is perhaps the best tip of all), dont be afraid to edit and re-write. Dont take all the criticism personally. Keep a good sense of humor while showing your work. Keep working at it till you feel it is just right and every single word is exactly where it should be.

Writing Past Fear 10 Ways To Stop Worrying And Start

Writing Past Fear 10 Ways To Stop Worrying And Start Writing

Many people claim that they want to write. Most won’t because of a giant monster called FEAR. It looms over individuals and paralyzes them. “What if I’m no good?” “ What if I’m wasting my time?” “What if…” “What if…” “What if…” Fear creates these never-ending questions, but fortunately the beast can be conquered. It’s conquered every day. Here are ten ways to get over fear and start writing:
1) Handwrite. There’s something informal about writing longhand. Just grab a piece of paper and jot notes down. They do not have to be anything brilliant. What you write could be something as simple as “I wish I had an idea about…” Don’t worry what your handwriting looks like, just fill the page with free thought.
2) Send yourself an email. An email isn’t “real writing” so use this format to jot a story down. You can write about an imaginary day or a neighborhood event. This is a great exercise to get in the storytelling mode and you don’t have to worry about the recipient – it’s you!
3) Commit before you’re ready. Tell someone you’re a writer and let them give you an assignment. Anything from writing a menu to a libretto. There’s no grading involved and to encourage yourself to accept the challenge promise yourself that you get a prize when you start.
4) Write out the fears. I know it can be scary to face them, but you can’t defeat what you don’t acknowledge. List all your fears. After you’ve finished writing them down, come up with ways to get rid of them. For example if you wrote, “I’m afraid I’m no good.” You could counter this statement with “I don’t have to be. It’s only a rough draft.” Counter “My ideas are stupid.” with “No, I’m trying to be perfect and I don’t have to be.”
5) Pretend to be someone else. Write in a different style, say an 18th century writer or one of your favorite bestselling authors. Mimic their rhythms and patterns. It’s not for you to compare, just to experiment. Write your article as Mark Twain would. Or start a short story about a kitten, first in the style of a horror writer then as a literary one. As children most of us didn’t have a problem with make-believe, it works for us a adults too!
6) Find a postcard. Look at the image on the front and jot down ideas about it on the back. You don’t have to fill up the entire space, this exercise is about getting ideas flowing.
7) Come up with a mantra that allows bad writing. “I will succeed as long as I write.” “Bad stories can be rewritten. A blank page can’t.” Keep these mantras (you can have as many as you want) close by and say it/them out loud when fear raises its ugly head. 8) Remember you’re reading the finished product. When you’re reading a published book or article you’re rarely (if ever) reading someone’s first draft. The book or article has gone through who knows how many revisions, editorial review, copyedits, etc… Once your work is finished, it will go through the same process before it’s shared with the public. So relax, you don’t have to be perfect.
9) Fear means you care. Far too often a writer may become too egotistical and ignore the benefit of being fearful. Not to the extent of being paralyzed, but using fear as a guide. By caring about your work and being concerned that your readers like or accept it will help you make sure your work is the best that it can be.
10) Procrastinate. You can always worry later. Write now.

Writing E-books for Cash The Myth and the Reality

Writing E-books for Cash The Myth and the Reality

If you are reading this article, then you are clearly interested in writing e-books for money, or at least you have given some thought to the idea. You have also no doubt researched the idea of writing for cash on the Internet and downloaded a handful of e-books or reports telling you how to turn your writing into a source of income. Many of the e-books or reports you have read probably waxed lyrical about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that newbie and established writers are making from publishing their work on the Internet. Moreover, amongst all the hyperbole you will have come across testimonies testifying to the magic of a particular writing system. Some of these testimonies may contain an element of truth. However, what these testimonies fail to tell you is the fact that a majority of wannabe e-book writers will not make a penny from their writing, no matter how great the writing system might be. This is understandable since the promoter of the writing system wants you to buy the product. So let us dispel the myth right now: not everyone can or will earn money from writing e-books.There are several reasons why many wannabe e-book writers never cut the mustard when it comes to turning their writing into cash. The most obvious reason is the lack of effort on the part of the wannabe e-book writer to write effectively.I recently came across several e-products where the author was trying to promote him or herself as a marketing or writing guru. Each of the texts that I read had potential but sadly most of them were littered with grammar and spelling mistakes. And whilst no one is perfect when it comes to the written word, I expected something a little better from those who were promoting themselves as leaders in their field.Although not everyone can be a Hemmingway or a Stephen King, the least an author can do when they are trying to sell their writing for cash is to run a grammar and spell check over their work. Better still, they should learn a little about the art of writing before going to press. If you are serious about making money from writing e-books, then be prepared to invest time, effort and energy to improve your skills as an author. It takes practise and a willingness to learn in order to become a proficient writer. The writing process merits respect from all those who are planning to make money from publishing their work. The key to becoming a profitable e-book writer rests in your ability to entertain and to captivate the reader through eloquent prose. If the reader is distracted because of too many spelling or grammatical errors in your work, then the reader will almost certainly go elsewhere for their reading material.Once you have lost your reader because of bad spelling or grammar, then it is unlikely that he or she will come back to read the other material you have on offer. In short, to become a profitable e-book writer you must approach the task of writing as you would any other profession – with due care and attention to detail.Writing e-books, like other professions, requires an understanding of your tools. Furthermore, you need to be proficient at using these tools if you want to become a successful e-book author. You need to know how the written word works in terms of communicating ideas, excitement, tension and passion. Without this knowledge and the skill to use it you will fail to gain an audience for your written material. At an elementary level, if you want to earn money from writing e-books, then you need to know how a sentence is constructed. You will also need to know how to use verb tenses to convey the appropriate sense of time and place. Once you have mastered the art of sentence structure, then you will need to learn how to stitch paragraphs together so that your writing comes across as a clear and coherent message. There are plenty of resources on the Internet and in local libraries to help the budding e-book writer master the art of writing. The local writing club or circle is a good place for writers to begin their career, not to mention a great place to exchange ideas with more experienced writers.Writing clubs or circles present the wannabe e-book writer with an opportunity to test their work and to gain feedback on what they have written. Constructive criticism from those in the know is always useful to anyone who is serious about improving their writing skills.Learning to write is a lifelong process and one that should be encouraged. While there is money to be made from writing e-books, not everyone can hope to make the grade as a profitable writer. However, this should not prevent you from trying, so long as you are willing to put in the effort.Writing e-books is an enjoyable pass time even if you do not make money from what you have written. You do not need to be a bestselling e-book author to benefit from your prose. Writing is a skill that can enhance the quality of your life both at work and at play. So whilst you might be considering a career as a profitable e-book writer, try to think of the other benefits that come with improving and developing your writing skills.

Writing As A Career

Writing as a career requires focus and persistence. It is a career that entails sheer hard work on your part. Writing as a career does not necessarily mean that you should make yourself miserably tough. Online writing as a career does not mean that you should sit glued to the computer for up to ten hours a day that you no longer have the time for yourself. Well, I am not saying that you can't get such regular jobs that will pay you decently, but you might be overworked and miserable at the end of the day.

One of the good sides about writing as a career is that you can specialize as a freelance writer who writes for different clients. You can make your own days and do not have to answer to another person's schedule. I admit that writing as a career, especially freelance writing, may mean that you have to go all out in order to meet a deadline. Unlike other jobs though, you have some measure of flexibility. I will advise you should not let the flexible hours that you have, go to waste.
When writing as a career, you will come across some moments when you will want to stay out of your usual environment in order to get the work done. Writing as a career online will need you to be able to cope with some distractions. For example, I make my bedroom both a place to cool off the heat and "an office" for inspiration to come so that I put pen to paper.
It takes more than desire to take writing as a career. Those who get more problems are those who want to be writers but do not lift a pen to write. They like to read books and end up not writing one. They even love to watch movies with the hope of being screen writers, but they never become one! Even, when they finally are able to write a novel or screenplay, they lack the persistence to see their work to completion. They do not edit it until it is perfect. They do not write a second one to build their skills up.
It is never enough to have only willpower for you to take up writing as a career!
I will advise that if you want to take writing as a career, you will need to push yourself. You need to write even when there are pleasant and unpleasant distractions. Have the zeal to see projects true to completion. Be strong enough to bounce back from criticism and even sharpen your skills afterwards!
There is no shame in writing strictly as a hobby. But if you want to take writing as a career, you should be ready to push through the difficult parts and see where the path leads you. Have a great experience as you writing as a career!

Writing a Self Evaluation

What is Self Evaluation?

Self evaluation can be explained as the process where a person has to assess himself. Students, after completing a particular course are asked to assess how much they have learned during that period. Even employees are expected to write a self evaluation for getting a promotion or salary raise. In the self evaluation, one is required to talk about the work they have done and their achievements. It is important that the self evaluation is an honest reflection of what you have done for the company. But many people are not comfortable about writing a self evaluation because they feel that they are boasting about themselves. Though a self evaluation should not seem like boasting about oneself, one has to definitely indulge in self praise to certain extent. It’s main difference from article writing is that all facts and observations are about yourself, whereas in an article you pick up information from various other sources.

How to Write a Self Evaluation?
The first thing to do is to make a rough draft of your achievements. On a piece of paper, make several columns and in the first one write about all the projects that you have undertaken. In another column, mention what you have contributed towards each one of them. In the column next to it, write about the kind of reaction and feedback that you received for each of the projects from your superiors. This would serve as the basis of your self appreciation. Also, mention some special awards you got for any of the projects. Once you have done this, start combining all these columns to come up with appropriate sentences. You will surely find it easy to write your self evaluation in this way.
Next thing that you have to write is about the skills that you have developed while working in the company. Mention your educational qualifications and also any specific training that you have undergone for a specific project. Write about how these skills helped you in your various projects and also about the skills that you gained while working on the project. Students who are writing a self evaluation after completing a course would have to write about whether the course helped them in gaining more knowledge and in development of certain important skills.
When you write a self evaluation, do not just talk about your skills, but also mention about how your work has benefited the company. Other than this, you should also mention about the work you have done beyond your actual duties and responsibilities. It is also necessary to talk about the changes that have happened in the company due to the work done by you.
In your self evaluation, it is also important to talk about your future plans and goals. Write about what you have planned for yourself in the coming future and not only about how it would enhance your progress, but also the progress of the company.
Students asked to write a self evaluation should talk about how the knowledge they have acquired during the course would be applied by them in their daily life. They also should mention their future plans and what according to them should be their next goal or the skill that they have to develop.
One very important thing that people writing a self evaluation should remember, is that though self praise is required, do not lie about anything. There are people who have a habit of exaggerating about themselves. However, here it should be strictly avoided and one should write only what is true.
Once you finish writing the rough draft, read it through once to see if anything has to be included or deleted from the content. See to it that your self evaluation is not running into pages, rather ti should be only a page long. After you rewrite the whole thing again, ask one of your friend or colleague to read and give you the correct feedback about whether the self evaluation looks genuine and relevant.
Writing a self evaluation is an important task, more so if it has the ability to affect your career development. Do not rush over your self evaluation to finish it off as soon as possible. You should take adequate time (at least a week) to complete the whole thing. Your self evaluation should reflect your progress and accomplishments in an honest way.

Writing a Book for the First Time

Writing is an art and very few are blessed with this art of expression. Most of you, who are eagerly reading this article must be either planning to write a book or must be in the first few weeks of writing your dream book. Many of us must be reading this article to get some motivation to take that extra step to start the ambitious project of writing a book for the first time. Whatever be the case, writing a book for the first time presents a set of challenges, that need to be removed at an early stage. This article is meant for those that wish to learn how to write a book for the first time.

Various forms of writing, be it fiction writing, non-fiction writing, novel writing or even writing an autobiography, all are just like carving an idol or shaping wet clay into a beautiful pot, for the writer. The process of getting a literature work published is painful in terms of the time, energy and imagination a writer puts behind it. However the joys of self-expression and self-satisfaction are equally rewarding and often incomparable to the monetary benefits, that one gets out of the project.

Writing a Book: Getting Started
Some fundamental writing tips that will guide you in the process of writing a book for the first time have been mentioned below. While trying to inculcate these habits, ensure that you tackle one of them at a time, so that you are able to achieve perfection in each of the mentioned habits gradually.

Schedule a Time for Writing
Discipline is a virtue that every writer must inculcate in their writing habits. In the beginning phase of writing, try to allocate a certain fraction of your time to writing, maybe 30 minutes or a maximum of 60 minutes per day. Choose any time of the day that you are comfortable with. The allotted time may be in the early morning, at dusk or may be just before going to bed. Just sit! Relax! And start writing. But make sure that consistency is maintained regularly. If you have started writing a book for the first time, then this discipline will help you in your entire career. You may find it fruitful to read more articles on time management.

Remove Distractions
Concentration is a prerequisite characteristic for a writer. When you sit to write, remove all distractions. A cluttered desk, noisy room, television and music are some of the common distracting factors. Try to sit in a silent room with the least number of things to distract you. Even if you prefer typing on your PC then log out of your e-mail account or better still, just disconnect the internet. Just keep the note pad or other writing options open so that you can start writing. Chatting with a friend and simultaneously writing is a very bad idea indeed. If a pen and a paper pad are your choice, choose simple stationery. Keep things simple and let nothing come between you and your words. Let the world be non-existent for some time. Writing a book for the first time needs these essential habits to be developed in our personality, so better do follow them, at least for your benefit. Learn some some simple concentration techniques and improve your productivity.

It’s all About Ideas, Capture them!
Getting engrossed the whole day thinking about your book is a waste of energy and time, besides leading to inefficiency in your other daily work. So, plan a separate time during the day, called as ‘idea time’. Just 15 minutes is enough. Plan out what you will write. You must be proceeding in your story or you may be about to introduce a new character, just plan and give a thought to them. You can even do this brainstorming a few minutes before the actual writing. Once you have decided what to include, be ready to write! Capture ideas by visiting places and meeting new people. You can also write when you are feeling inspired and motivated! For writers, there are times when we just can’t write and at times we are at the peak of expression. Accept it as a part and parcel of writing. Disappointment isn’t the key, keep striving! Read more on tips on how how to write a book.

Get it Edited and Revise Often

The editor can be your college teacher, some friend working in the writing department of some magazine, newspapers etc. and even your close friend who has a flair for writing and reading. In the initial stages of your writing, a paid editor is not a very bright idea as it may be quite expensive for you. Publishers and paid editors are best visited after you have a ready copy of your write up and a synopsis of the novel you are writing.

Two Books on Writing Fiction You MUST Have!

I’ve been writing for well over 15 years and have read a lot of books on the craft. Some are lifesavers, other have a few pearls of wisdom, while a few aren’t worth the time or money. There are even books on writing that leave you feeling defeated and wanting to throw your computer, along with your dreams of becoming a successful writer, out the window.I won’t talk about books that cover the basics, such as The Elements of Style. I will assume you know the essential mechanics of writing and know how to form cohesive sentences. The following books, my two absolute favorites, will give you the shot of adrenaline you may be in desperate need of to keep going, keep pursuing, and keep following your writing dreams! On Writing by Stephen King-This has got to be my number one book on writing. The first half is an autobiography. I found his writing to be very real and from the heart. I laughed and even felt a bit saddened at times. You read about his childhood, his first attempts at publishing when he was in grade school, and all of the hard work, long hours and dedication he put into his writing career. This in itself gave me hope that I could someday be a successful author as well! The second half of the book is a no bull, no fluff guide to writing. What I like most about it is that he doesn’t bog you down with rule after rule, and strict organization. Forget outlines and note cards and character sketches! He recommends that you just sit down at your computer, go with your muse and see where he/she takes you. He tells you what you need to know from idea to sale, as well as a few simple considerations and rules. He uses examples of his own work and that of others to show what’s good prose and what’s not. He offers some exercises as well.My writing has flourished because of this book. It’s spontaneous and real. When I sit down at the computer I don’t even know what the next scene will entail, but I’m always amazed to see what my inner self can come up with once I get out of my own way.Zen in the Art of Writing by Ray Bradbury-Be prepared! Ray Bradbury will take you by the hand and leave you breathless in this little book. I can honestly say that I’ve never felt more exhilarated or had more ideas popping into my mind than after reading this book. He advises you to stay drunk on writing because it saves us from reality, to write at least a thousand words a day every day, to write from real life, and much more. What I liked most about this book is the way I felt after reading it. Zen in the Art of Writing is like having Ray Bradbury right there with you, guiding you, cheering you on, and urging you to stop creeping and start flying!Much in the same vein as Stephen King’s book, this gem is not about rules that fence you in and leave you no room to breathe, but in letting loose the inner writer. It draws that fine line between genius and insanity. I loved it!My creativity has soared because of these books. I highly recommend them.

Top Five Fiction Writing Tips

We’ve compiled a few of the best fiction writing tips on the Internet. These
won’t provide all the answers you may be looking for to improve your fiction
writing. If you’re truly serious about the craft of writing fiction, then you
should try an online course or seek out the guidance of a professional writer. A
few quick tips can only take you so far on your journey to write good fiction.

With that said, the following tips should at least provide you with the
motivation to get started and a rough idea of how to start. So here they are
…1: Start Writing Only After You Know TheseSome writers love to
outline the novel in its entirety before they write a single word. Other writers
prefer to sketch out a few notes and jump right in. Either way you choose to
approach writing your novel, before a single word goes on paper, you need to
know these:- Who the story is about – The primary driving conflict
of the story- Who or what opposes the story’s main character- How it all
turns outIf, at a minimum, these four issues are clear in your mind,
then you can feel somewhat comfortable in getting started on your
writing.2: Don’t Write A Novel, Write A SceneThe idea of writing a
novel can be overwhelming. Don’t let it overwhelm you. A novel isn’t written all
at once. It’s written scene by scene. So approach it that way. Write one scene
at a time. Don’t worry about the rest of the story, just focus on getting that
one scene completed.3: Use Your Own Voice It’s tempting to try to
mimic the voice of a writer you admire. Most writers are readers first. They
come to the craft by way of appreciation for the talents of others. So it’s not
uncommon to try to write in the same voice as someone you’ve been reading.
However, you’re doing yourself and your readers a tremendous disservice. The
world doesn’t need another Stephen King or Ray Bradbury or Janet Evanovich.
Readers want new voices, fresh voices. Give them what they want.4:
WriteOut of all the fiction writing tips that I could offer, this is
the only one that truly matters. If you want to write a novel, you have to
write. Not occasionally. Not only when the muse strikes you. Not only when the
rest of the family is out of the house. No, you have to write everyday. Even if
it’s only for fifteen minutes. You must sit down and apply words to paper each
and every day. Write!5: Edit With The Story In MindOne of the most
difficult tasks you’ll encounter as a writer is editing your work honestly.
You’ll know when you encounter a passage or a scene that doesn’t move the story
forward, that you know you could cut without affecting any other elements. But
