Writing for Writing

Writers writing about writing may seem to be a highly conceited act. Since I am not reeaaally a writer, or at least I don’t claim myself to be one, I guess me giving tips on writing can be taken casually. Preferably with a pinch of salt. I may not have contributed much to the world of print but I do know a thing or two about being a connoisseur for writing. Apart from blogging and writing articles currently, I used to write award winning poems and short stories during my earlier days.
Overtime everyone develops a style of doing something; anything. For writing, I know I have a certain style by now, though there is way too much room for polishing up.
The initial stage is the creative process which is something that we do not need to understand. There is nothing to understand because creativity does not have to make sense.
Creativity starts with a feeling. The kind of feeling to do something on an instinct. Artists, just like writers, start off by doing a piece of work randomly. It may not make any sense for a start, but at most times it triggers off a new idea in the artist’s mind to create something creative. Same thing happens to writers, initial works may be shown the path to recycle bins but end up being useful by sparking off something of value in the writer’s mind. Probably that is why recycle bins are named as such, to be recycled. Anyway, once we get an idea, we have to grab it quickly, just like grabbing a seat in an extremely crowded bus, and hold on to it in order to use it.
The creative process may seem complex. To ease the complexity we can simply develop the good old habit of reading. Actually not can, but we should read. Unless we read, we can’t write. It is as simple as it gets.
The next simple, or maybe not so simple, task is to write frequently. As frequently as possible as much as time permits. Okay that seemed like a redundant statement but you get the point. The more we write the lesser the chances of getting a writer’s block. When I mention writer’s block, I don’t mean getting some column to write in a magazine but I am refering to a mental block in terms of writing. The more we write, the more we learn to write in a fluid manner and develop a style of our own along the way if we have not got one already.
As we continue writing, we will slowly discover our voice. When that happens, we get to know about ourselves better.
Oh and one more thing, of course the nitty gritty details like grammar and spelling errors have to be avoided. That’s right, totally avoided. For people like me *ahem*, it has become a habit long ago but that is because I made sure I was conscious of that. Proofreading is of high importance. Proofreading one more time after proofreading is of high recommendation. Most people don’t enjoy it but fortunately I do.
Speaking of which, I just got to know some time back that there is actually a job for proofreading alone. Hmm, I am seriously considering it. Anyway, if you find the above useful, try it. If you don’t, hmm, try it anyway because there is something to be gained along the way I am sure.

Writing Articles – 8 Hard-hitting Article Writing Tips

One of the best reasons for writing articles is to get traffic to your webiste and lots of it, but you won’t attract much traffic with boring content, ramblings and regurgitated ideas that no one cares about. Your articles must be interesting, easy to read and spark interest.
How can you do that? Here are a few tips:
1. Forget what you Learned in English Class
Internet surfers are skimmers, they want something that is easy to read and gets to the point fast. When it comes to paragraphs, shorter is better and each paragraph should consist of about 3-5 sentences. The last thing they want to read are big long run-on sentences, even if they belong together it’s easier to read if you break them up. Keep your words simple, get to the point quickly and don’t ramble or get preachy.
One thing you do need to remember from English class is make your writing understandable. I do this by speaking what I write. After you write it, say it out loud. If it doesn’t make sense to you, it won’t make sense to anyone else.
2. Use a Catchy Title
Your title is what lures your reader in. It must capture their attention and incite intrigue. This means using powerful, descriptive words. For example, the title of this article is “8 hard-hitting article writing tips’. ‘Hard-hitting’ is a powerful description of these tips. Get the idea?
Remember also that your title should reflect exactly what your article is about, so keep it relevant and focused.
3. Skip the Broad Topics
There’s nothing worse than a broad topic with little detail. Keep your article focused on one specific topic and then follow through with informative details. Deliver good information in an expert manner. If you have too many topics running through your head, break them up into separate articles. If you are a little foggy about what details to include, ask yourself the who, what, when, where, why and how questions for ideas.
Additionally, keep your ideas flowing in a logical manner, don’t jump around. Your article should flow like smooth running water.
4. Stir up Some Action
Light a fire under your reader by using action words. This means avoiding words like was, were, can, maybe, are, am, may, could, should, etc. Bring your message alive with action words like get, find, will, do, must, go, run, drive, etc. The idea is to bring forth a powerful message that adds enthusiasm and provokes action. Don’t be wishy-washy with your ideas. Project a powerful, authoritative, say what you mean voice.
5. Deliver Quality over Quantity
When submitting your articles to a directory, use the minimum number of words it requires. If a directory requires of minimum of 500 words and your article is 1000 words, split it up into two articles. The more articles you can submit the better. Having more articles is better than having larger articles.
6. Show Some Personality for cryin’ out loud
Let’s face it, articles can be dull. Just read some of the articles out there and you’ll see what I mean. You’ll get a lot more feedback and interest if you can interject some personality in your writing. If you are a funny person, let that humor come through. Even a little sarcasm or controversy can add to a reader’s enjoyment and help put them at ease.
No one wants dull, so let your personality reflect a ‘spark of spirit’ that will help your reader better engage in your article.
7. Funnel Your Readers
Forget the bio pitch. Your articles are not the best place for them; leave that to your website. Instead use your article’s resource box to funnel your readers to your website. If they liked what they read in your article they will likely want to see more. Use your resource box to lead them there by attracting them with something of value. For example, your resource box might say something like this:
- get your free course here…- learn more about xyz here…- get more articles like this here…
The idea is to channel your readers to your website, not pitch your bio. At this point no one really cares. Get them to your site first.
8. Grammar and Spelling Count
Ever read an article with poor grammar and spelling errors? It’s a bit of a turn-off. It diminishes your professionalism and authority. That’s why you must use spell checker, particularly after making article changes or updates. Keep in mind; however that spellchecker may not pick up errors for words like ‘there’ and ‘their’ so give your articles a good eye-balling before submitting them.
As for your grammar, you don’t have to follow every rule of grammar but you don’t want to sound like a first grader either. Don’t be sloppy; take the time to read over your article for good punctuation and a style of grammar that projects intelligence yet lets your personality shine through.

Writing a Book Outline

One of the more important steps on your journey to writing a
book is writing a book outline. This is also one of the most overlooked steps,
as nobody likes to do the prep work, but everyone loves to write. Taking the
time to write a book outline, however, can mean the difference between writing
a high quality book and writing a book that winds up in the bargain bin at the
local Barnes and Noble.

The book outline is important for several reasons. First and
foremost, writing a book outline will keep your writing process focused and
organized, so that your book doesnt become one of those rambling tomes that
bore the hell out of everyone. Second, writing a book outline will allow you to
see the forest through the trees. Often, taking a step back and reviewing your
book outline will allow you to get back on track when you find yourself stuck
on a particular part of the book.

There are a couple of ways you can write your book outline.
The first is familiar to nearly everyone, as it is the outlining process taught
in every grade school in the country. You know the one, Roman Numeral I,
capital letter A, B, etc This is a very simplistic book outlining method, but
it is also very powerful because it is easy to understand.

The second, more modern approach to writing a book outline
is called mind-mapping. In this process, you write the central idea of your
book in a circle in the middle of the page. You then write the central idea of
each chapter on a branch extending out from that circle. Then, you write
sub-branches with major points to include in each chapter. Repeat the process
for each chapter on a separate page, with your chapter central idea as the middle
circle. This approach to writing a book outline has the advantage of being a
more visual process than the simple outline.

Whichever method you choose for writing a book outline, just
make sure that you do indeed write one. You will find that with a bit of
thought organization using a book outline, your writing process will go much
faster and be much higher quality. Before you know it, your book will be done,
and you will thank yourself for taking the time to write a book outline.

Writing a Book for the First Time

Writing is an art and very few are blessed with this art of expression. Most of you, who are eagerly reading this article must be either planning to write a book or must be in the first few weeks of writing your dream book. Many of us must be reading this article to get some motivation to take that extra step to start the ambitious project of writing a book for the first time. Whatever be the case, writing a book for the first time presents a set of challenges, that need to be removed at an early stage. This article is meant for those that wish to learn how to write a book for the first time.

Various forms of writing, be it fiction writing, non-fiction writing, novel writing or even writing an autobiography, all are just like carving an idol or shaping wet clay into a beautiful pot, for the writer. The process of getting a literature work published is painful in terms of the time, energy and imagination a writer puts behind it. However the joys of self-expression and self-satisfaction are equally rewarding and often incomparable to the monetary benefits, that one gets out of the project.

Writing a Book: Getting Started
Some fundamental writing tips that will guide you in the process of writing a book for the first time have been mentioned below. While trying to inculcate these habits, ensure that you tackle one of them at a time, so that you are able to achieve perfection in each of the mentioned habits gradually.

Schedule a Time for Writing
Discipline is a virtue that every writer must inculcate in their writing habits. In the beginning phase of writing, try to allocate a certain fraction of your time to writing, maybe 30 minutes or a maximum of 60 minutes per day. Choose any time of the day that you are comfortable with. The allotted time may be in the early morning, at dusk or may be just before going to bed. Just sit! Relax! And start writing. But make sure that consistency is maintained regularly. If you have started writing a book for the first time, then this discipline will help you in your entire career. You may find it fruitful to read more articles on time management.

Remove Distractions
Concentration is a prerequisite characteristic for a writer. When you sit to write, remove all distractions. A cluttered desk, noisy room, television and music are some of the common distracting factors. Try to sit in a silent room with the least number of things to distract you. Even if you prefer typing on your PC then log out of your e-mail account or better still, just disconnect the internet. Just keep the note pad or other writing options open so that you can start writing. Chatting with a friend and simultaneously writing is a very bad idea indeed. If a pen and a paper pad are your choice, choose simple stationery. Keep things simple and let nothing come between you and your words. Let the world be non-existent for some time. Writing a book for the first time needs these essential habits to be developed in our personality, so better do follow them, at least for your benefit. Learn some some simple concentration techniques and improve your productivity.

It’s all About Ideas, Capture them!
Getting engrossed the whole day thinking about your book is a waste of energy and time, besides leading to inefficiency in your other daily work. So, plan a separate time during the day, called as ‘idea time’. Just 15 minutes is enough. Plan out what you will write. You must be proceeding in your story or you may be about to introduce a new character, just plan and give a thought to them. You can even do this brainstorming a few minutes before the actual writing. Once you have decided what to include, be ready to write! Capture ideas by visiting places and meeting new people. You can also write when you are feeling inspired and motivated! For writers, there are times when we just can’t write and at times we are at the peak of expression. Accept it as a part and parcel of writing. Disappointment isn’t the key, keep striving! Read more on tips on how how to write a book.

Get it Edited and Revise Often
As you progress in the endeavor to write a book for the first time, it is mandatory that you choose someone who will love to edit your write-ups and will guide you in enhancing your writing skills. The editor can be your college teacher, some friend working in the writing department of some magazine, newspapers etc. and even your close friend who has a flair for writing and reading. In the initial stages of your writing, a paid editor is not a very bright idea as it may be quite expensive for you. Publishers and paid editors are best visited after you have a ready copy of your write up and a synopsis of the novel you are writing.

Weak Writing with Weasel Words

What are weasel words?Well,
whether you are actively aware of this or not, weasel words are a way
of slipping personal opinion into what you are writing, and to do it in
such a way that it sounds credible, but isn’t exactly verifiable. Keep reading. I’ll give you a list of some common weasel word phrases toward the end, but let’s talk about why weasel words are not a good thing.

If I personally think driving too fast is not a good idea and I write a piece about it like this:

“Many drivers exceed the posted speed limit…”

Can
you define ‘many’? How many is many? See, I can make the statement and
you really cannot refute my statement because, depending on how you
view it, it might be true or it might not, and it’s all going to depend
on what ‘many’ means, to you. Without any facts or stats to back that
up, ‘many’ can mean just about anything I want it to.Also, the inverse of that statement can also be true.

“Many drivers stay below the posted speed limit….”

If
‘many’ cannot be quantified, as you can see, both statements can
invariably be true, without the other statement being untrue. Now,
I suppose if you’re writing an opinion piece, some weasel words are to
be expected, but wouldn’t your opinion piece – and most definitely your
factual/informational content – be stronger and make a better point if
it had real information? For example, “A survey by (name who did the survey) says that 90% of all drivers on the road exceed the posted limit…”Okay, that’s an example only – have no idea if there’s even a real stat for that particular example, but that’s not the point. The point is – which is stronger:

“Many do this….”

~~or~~

“90% do this…”

Clearly, the second one is stronger. Now,
why are they called weasel words? Because this is a trick that is
usually used by a writer or speaker when they are wanting to push their
opinion in their writing or speaking, but they do not have the
information or sometimes even the truth on their side and they want to
‘weasel’ out of giving cold, hard information and facts. (again,
usually because the facts do not support their position). Now, what are some other weasel words?”Some…” “Most….” “Many…” “A lot…” “More and more…” “Critics says….”"Opponents feel…”"A few…”Can you add others to this list?If
you’ve ever tried to edit or use Wikipedia, you probably know, they are
very much against weasel words. Why? Because, strange as it may seem to
think of them as a wholly reliable source, Wikipedia is trying to be an
online ‘living’ encyclopedia, and weasel words are not quantifiable. If
you are writing fact/informational based articles or content, avoid
weasel words completely, and be sure to back up your assertions about
stats or facts with a reliable source. If you are writing opinion
pieces, and you feel you must use weasels words, be prepared to have
someone come along and slam your opinion as groundless or not based on
facts. While it’s true one can find a stat to support just
about any opinion one might have, a fact or stat is still preferable to
a weasel word that is lazy and possibly indicative of intentional
desire to sway opinion without providing any proof of that viewpoint. While
reading content on the internet, keep your eye open for the use of
weasel words, and you might find yourself a bit less gullible when
reading things on the internet! But most importantly, review
your own writing and try to remove weasel words wherever you can or
back them up with solid, useful, quantifiable information.

Top Five Fiction Writing Tips

We’ve compiled a few of the best fiction writing tips on the Internet. These
won’t provide all the answers you may be looking for to improve your fiction
writing. If you’re truly serious about the craft of writing fiction, then you
should try an online course or seek out the guidance of a professional writer. A
few quick tips can only take you so far on your journey to write good fiction.

With that said, the following tips should at least provide you with the
motivation to get started and a rough idea of how to start. So here they are
…1: Start Writing Only After You Know TheseSome writers love to
outline the novel in its entirety before they write a single word. Other writers
prefer to sketch out a few notes and jump right in. Either way you choose to
approach writing your novel, before a single word goes on paper, you need to
know these:- Who the story is about – The primary driving conflict
of the story- Who or what opposes the story’s main character- How it all
turns outIf, at a minimum, these four issues are clear in your mind,
then you can feel somewhat comfortable in getting started on your
writing.2: Don’t Write A Novel, Write A SceneThe idea of writing a
novel can be overwhelming. Don’t let it overwhelm you. A novel isn’t written all
at once. It’s written scene by scene. So approach it that way. Write one scene
at a time. Don’t worry about the rest of the story, just focus on getting that
one scene completed.3: Use Your Own Voice It’s tempting to try to
mimic the voice of a writer you admire. Most writers are readers first. They
come to the craft by way of appreciation for the talents of others. So it’s not
uncommon to try to write in the same voice as someone you’ve been reading.
However, you’re doing yourself and your readers a tremendous disservice. The
world doesn’t need another Stephen King or Ray Bradbury or Janet Evanovich.
Readers want new voices, fresh voices. Give them what they want.4:
WriteOut of all the fiction writing tips that I could offer, this is
the only one that truly matters. If you want to write a novel, you have to
write. Not occasionally. Not only when the muse strikes you. Not only when the
rest of the family is out of the house. No, you have to write everyday. Even if
it’s only for fifteen minutes. You must sit down and apply words to paper each
and every day. Write!5: Edit With The Story In MindOne of the most
difficult tasks you’ll encounter as a writer is editing your work honestly.
You’ll know when you encounter a passage or a scene that doesn’t move the story
forward, that you know you could cut without affecting any other elements. But
do you have the toughness to cut it? What if it’s beautifully written? What if
you put your heart and soul into it? Could you still cut it? It’s hard to cut
your own work, especially when you’re proud of what you’ve written. Bottom line:
does the passage contribute to the story? If it doesn’t, face up to it, cut it
and move on. There they are, five top fiction writing tips. I truly hope
you’ve found something here that was worth your time. However, I will repeat,
tips are fine, but a good fiction writing course will not only help you write
better fiction, it will help you to write it faster.More fiction writing

Written Handout: A printed handout with details of the speech can be provided to the audience after the speech is over. A printed handout will be a written reminder and will make the audience more receptive to the speaker.
Simple and Short Language: A good speech with short and simple words to express the idea without the use of jargons, will make it easier on the audience to grasp the idea. Simple words and simple language will make the speech much clearer to the audience making it easier in retaining the speech.
Evaluate the Speech: A good speech can be improved by taping and listening to the speech, before presenting it to the audience. The writer can make improvements in the speech with the feedbacks to bring perfection.
A speaker without creative writing skills, can write a decent speech with the use of speech writing techniques and skills available. Speech writing tips are also available in books and on-line mediums which can help in writing a speech.

Reflections on My First Year Writing for SearchWarp

Writing for SearchWarp has taught me many things. One of which is the importance of being accurate in writing – even more important than being Earnest! Thus I would like to make an admission: I have actually joined SearchWarp one year and nine days ago at the time of writing. But, as a writer yourself, you’ll probably know what it’s like. You plan that article and say you’ll write it on such and such a date and then you get some wacky idea and just have to write it down then woops a daisy it’s published. Last weeks column was prompted by the delivery of a bin – of all things.
It is amazing how your life changes when you really get into writing. I recall when I first started out writing I struggled to think what to write about.  Now the problem is choosing what not to write about. I never sit and think about what to write it just comes to me suddenly. I just go about doing this that, and then the next thing I’ve got an article idea.  When my printer stopped working right I decided to write “Is it legal to murder My Printer?”.

The other amazing thing that has happened on SearchWarp is that I have got 52,482 readers (or rather page views)! For someone just starting out as a writer I say that’s good. For a website to bring that amount of traffic to their writers is even better.
I’d also like to thank all at SearchWarp for the comments, the ratings, the reading of my stuff, the responding to my comments, joining my fan club and all the support I’ve got over the years. I’ve written for a few sites but none come close to SearchWarp in terms of the people. Yes, there are some annoying people that rate my articles one star and post nasty comments or even email me junk but they are few and far between. The vast majority of SearchWarp consist of wonderfully clever, open minded people who take to a debate like a fish to water with the spirits of an overflowing shot glass. This is really a place I feel I belong.

An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from the authors person point of view. An essay can either be informative, critic or argumentative this will depend on the reason why the essay is being composed. Excellent music essay must meet all steps that are followed when composing an essay.

Step 1: Research is the first step to consider when writing an essay. Research involves researching various articles, journals, college admission essays, books, internet and other sources that may be considered beneficial and valid in information required to complete the essay. Taking notes during this stage of music essay writing is highly recommended as this will help the author brainstorm and get the required amount of information to complete the essay.

Step 2: Analysis is the second step in composing an excellent music essay. Analysis will require and depend entirely on the information and argumentation gained while researching. Collected points will be analyzed and the author will define the claims, reasons and evidences used to guide him/her write ones essay on music. This will help in defining clearly the message that wants to be aired through the essay. A good thesis statement is a valid foundation for a good music essay.

Step 4: Outline is also one of the most important parts of the music essay writing process. It helps in organizing the ideas and assists the reader in understanding what the essay is about. Outline acts as a map of the essay and helps the author in writing an organized work without forgetting any vital information that may affect the flow of the music essay.

Step 5: As soon as the outline for you music essay is completed, you can move on to introduction. The introductory paragraph is intended to grab the readers attention and have their entire mind concentrated in understanding the whole concept of the essay. Thesis will follow in informing the reader what the whole essay is about. The introduction part is aimed at hooking the readers interest, and if poorly written, can drive the readers interest away from your music essay.

Step 6: Body paragraphs play the most significant role in your music essay. Each paragraph should address a single idea that supports thesis statement. The first sentence introduces the idea and expands as the paragraph proceeds. The idea must be supported with evidence within the paragraph.

Step 7: Conclusion gives an overall wrap-up to your music essay. A good conclusion should leave the readers with a memorable and interesting thought that will make them ponder on the content of the essay. The paragraph is also aimed at making sure the reader understands the whole concept of your music essay and will remember the key points brought out.

How to Improve Your Writing Skills

Writing is an art – a creative art. It is not just a mere craft of constructing grammatically correct sentences with proper spelling and punctuation, but much more than that. Writing skill has two parts – one is its craft and the other is its creative part. The first can be learned or improved easily. The latter, however, can be refined as it is more related to ones inbuilt abilities. When you start writing an article or essay you should set an objective for which you want to write the article. The objective can be for informing, persuading, explaining or entertaining. The objective will define the contours or whereabouts of your writing. Any writing is normally meant for someone else to read. It is not for self satisfaction alone, even if self satisfaction is an underlying passion. So keep those readers in mind while writing an article.Every piece of writing is an embodiment of ideas arranged logically or sequentially and meant for communication between the author and the readers. Getting the right idea or a set of ideas to write on is the first step in writing a piece. Choose an idea that will be of interest to the readers whom you intend to address. Then think of as many things as possible about the idea in different perspectives or view points. Relax your mind to get every shades of the idea in focus. Focus your thinking on the subject broadly and deeply. Let your mind explore all aspects of the topic. Look at the topic from different angles. When you think about so many aspects, it is quite natural that confusion may creep into your thinking making you incapable to think clearly. This occurs not because of your inability but because you think about it in many ways simultaneously. Let all those thoughts come in without any sequencing. Organizing those thoughts in logical sequence is the right solution of this problem. Write down the ideas in a sequential manner as a list or within circles as a mind map and then organize them according to the interrelationship and the purpose and object of the essay. When you set your pen to paper for writing, there will be writers stumbling block. Overcoming this block is the hardest part in writing. The best way to overcome this block is to build up your desire or passion to write. When your desire to write is so intense, you can overcome the inertia on starting to write. When you overcome the block and start writing, don’t think about the grammatical correctness of your sentence or even sequence of your writing. Allow your ides to flow out into sentences, though not correct, proper or sequential. You can refine it later. When you finish a sketchy draft with an overview of all ideas that you want to put in the article, read your writing from the start to the end – reading loudly is better – and do some macro editing to fill the gaps in ideas to improve the grammar rather than correcting the sentences grammatically or structurally The first draft is probably the worst draft and you need to rewrite the draft several times to make it better. The crux of writing better is rewriting as many times as possible.Remember some editing tips while rewriting. Linking up one sentence with the other using connecting words (like because, hence, as, therefore etc) can make a piece of writing logically and sequentially better. The connecting words work as a logical sequencing mechanism. Connectors add or emphasis an idea (besides, in addition etc.), or contrast two ideas (though, however etc.) or show cause effect (because, therefore etc) in any piece of writing. But over use of connectors can make a paragraph poor in style, as well. Remember that every paragraph should be coherent with sequential sentences that altogether make a holistic piece. The ideas should flow one another logically and move smoothly to yet another. Poor coherence will defy the readers understanding of the concepts. Sentences and paragraphs should be designed cohesively in a way ideas flow smoothly without the readers having any problem in following them logically. While writing a piece, use rhetorical strategies to engage the readers. Correct grammar and punctuation are, as well, important. After a few redrafting to make it better every time, ask a friend or someone else to read your passage and commend on it. Based on the suggestion, redraft it for a few more times. If you do not have someone else in your acquaintance to read, you may read your draft critically deposing as a reader. Then incorporate your critical ideas as inputs in redrafting. When you are satisfied with your draft in ideas and sequencing, start the micro editing for grammar, punctuation and further styling. Then keep your near final draft closed for a few days without looking at it and then re-read it after a few days break to see the writing with a fresh mind. Then reedit the article with microscopic details and take a final version for publication. The final draft would be far different from the earlier drafts. In short effective writing depends on rhythm and flow of ideas / sentences, organization of material into paragraphs and arrangement of paragraph into a coherent piece. The best way to build your writing skill is nothing but practice. Practice, Practice, Practice, you will become a better writer.
