Writing Poetry How to Write a Poem

Writing poetry is quite a daunting task. It sounds easy at the outset, but when one gets down to it, it becomes more and more complicated. Some of us can go ahead and create a magical flow with words quite easily, while it is a long-winded and onerous task for others. Needless to say, when one contemplates writing poetry, one must be up to the challenge.

There are several things that one must consider while wondering how to write poetry. Here is a list of things to think about that, hopefully, will make the process easier for you.

The Subject:

Commonly known as the Theme of the poem, this is the important starting point and central point of your work. What is the poem all about? What are you trying to get across to the world at large, via your poem? Is it a story, an experience, a description of events, or a description of a place?

An interesting way to take the jump from this point is writing down the words, phrases or sentences that come to your mind when you are thinking about the subject or the theme of your poem. Dont worry if nothing sounds or feels right, just write it down for now.

The Feeling:

A poem, no matter how descriptive it may be, is not to be used to state the obvious. We all know that the grass is green, for example. What you need to express in your poem is what you felt when you saw the green grass. What emotions did it evoke within you? What were you going through at the time and how did seeing the green grass change or enhance your feelings at that moment of time? With your words, you have to convey what you feel or felt. The readers have to understand the depth of what you were going through. A poem is essentially about the emotions of the poet.

A way to get past the barrier of writing about emotions is to take ordinary things from your daily life and write down whatever feeling words come to your mind when you see the object. Such a list will come in handy and is a good way to practice.

The Mood:

How do you want to portray your thoughts, ideas and feelings via this poem? Do you want to make it a serious poem, or a funny one, a sarcastic one or an irreverent one? The mood can often help you convey the feelings more effectively.

Once you have your feeling words in place, you can choose different moods of the poem and try to write a sentence or two that contains the theme and the feeling in these various moods. Which mood do you like the best? Which mood conveys what you feel about the subject more effectively?

The Style:

Choose a style of writing the poem from among several from classical to the modern contemporary styles of writing poetry, there are many to choose from. Pick a style which is easier for you to work with. Most modern poets often use the free verse style of poetry. Although, to the beginner, this style may not have a formal structure and sound easy to write in, look closely at the work of popular free verse poets and you will find a basic form lurking somewhere.

An exercise to try out at this juncture is to write down your thoughts about something or someone in free verse and then trying to see if you can put those lines into another well-known structure or style of writing poetry. Perhaps a few changes here and there and it might do the trick. Try doing that with two or three styles and find one which you are more comfortable with. This process will help you revise your work and find your style at the same time.

The Audience:

Who are you writing for? The audience of the poem can help you choose the language, the style and the words to be used in your piece. Experiment with forms and words to find your unique Voice as a poet.

Read out your poem to a few of your friends, relatives, and neighbors etc who fit in with your description of your target audience. Ask for their feedback and what they felt about the poem. Dont take negative feedback or criticism to heart it is in fact a learning experience all the way. Try and try till you get it just right.

Other Helpful Tips:

It makes sense to study the forms and styles used by poets across the world to become more familiar with structure, format, rhythm, rhyme and meter along with several other elements used in poetry.
A dictionary or a thesaurus is very handy to have. Often, a search for meanings of words can help you take a jump off to another wonderful dimension within your poetry.
Keep a journal, notebook or a diary where you record your thoughts, feelings and experiences, even dreams. You may never know where they may lead you off to.
Attend as many poet / poetry groups as you can. This helps you get your work read and critiqued by other people and can provide you with valuable insights on your work.
And to conclude, (and this is perhaps the best tip of all), dont be afraid to edit and re-write. Dont take all the criticism personally. Keep a good sense of humor while showing your work. Keep working at it till you feel it is just right and every single word is exactly where it should be.

Writing Past Fear 10 Ways To Stop Worrying And Start

Writing Past Fear 10 Ways To Stop Worrying And Start Writing

Many people claim that they want to write. Most won’t because of a giant monster called FEAR. It looms over individuals and paralyzes them. “What if I’m no good?” “ What if I’m wasting my time?” “What if…” “What if…” “What if…” Fear creates these never-ending questions, but fortunately the beast can be conquered. It’s conquered every day. Here are ten ways to get over fear and start writing:
1) Handwrite. There’s something informal about writing longhand. Just grab a piece of paper and jot notes down. They do not have to be anything brilliant. What you write could be something as simple as “I wish I had an idea about…” Don’t worry what your handwriting looks like, just fill the page with free thought.
2) Send yourself an email. An email isn’t “real writing” so use this format to jot a story down. You can write about an imaginary day or a neighborhood event. This is a great exercise to get in the storytelling mode and you don’t have to worry about the recipient – it’s you!
3) Commit before you’re ready. Tell someone you’re a writer and let them give you an assignment. Anything from writing a menu to a libretto. There’s no grading involved and to encourage yourself to accept the challenge promise yourself that you get a prize when you start.
4) Write out the fears. I know it can be scary to face them, but you can’t defeat what you don’t acknowledge. List all your fears. After you’ve finished writing them down, come up with ways to get rid of them. For example if you wrote, “I’m afraid I’m no good.” You could counter this statement with “I don’t have to be. It’s only a rough draft.” Counter “My ideas are stupid.” with “No, I’m trying to be perfect and I don’t have to be.”
5) Pretend to be someone else. Write in a different style, say an 18th century writer or one of your favorite bestselling authors. Mimic their rhythms and patterns. It’s not for you to compare, just to experiment. Write your article as Mark Twain would. Or start a short story about a kitten, first in the style of a horror writer then as a literary one. As children most of us didn’t have a problem with make-believe, it works for us a adults too!
6) Find a postcard. Look at the image on the front and jot down ideas about it on the back. You don’t have to fill up the entire space, this exercise is about getting ideas flowing.
7) Come up with a mantra that allows bad writing. “I will succeed as long as I write.” “Bad stories can be rewritten. A blank page can’t.” Keep these mantras (you can have as many as you want) close by and say it/them out loud when fear raises its ugly head. 8) Remember you’re reading the finished product. When you’re reading a published book or article you’re rarely (if ever) reading someone’s first draft. The book or article has gone through who knows how many revisions, editorial review, copyedits, etc… Once your work is finished, it will go through the same process before it’s shared with the public. So relax, you don’t have to be perfect.
9) Fear means you care. Far too often a writer may become too egotistical and ignore the benefit of being fearful. Not to the extent of being paralyzed, but using fear as a guide. By caring about your work and being concerned that your readers like or accept it will help you make sure your work is the best that it can be.
10) Procrastinate. You can always worry later. Write now.

Writing N Advertising

Advertising is making known; calling public attention to a product, service, or company by means of paid announcements so as to affect perception or arouse consumer desire to make a purchase or take a particular action.

Advertising is the no personal communication of information usually paid for and usually persuasive in nature about products, services or ideas by identified sponsors through the various media.”

“The best ads are written from the heart. Write down the good ideas and the wild ideas. Dont try to edit your ideas at the start. Dont put a brake on your imagination.” – John Caples

In very interesting definition of a Gerry Miller: – Advertising is defining an interesting story.
E.g. “The cat sat on the mat” is not a story. “The cat sat on the dogs mat.”

Writing an ad is an art. There is an importance of creating ad concept and using words while writing an effective copy of ad. Here is a small effort to understand effective ad writing.

Copywriting and Advertising

Karon Thackston says that no matter how ever beautiful the ads are, no matter how ever effective the words are- the only thing that matters is display of the ad. The beauty of the ad gets elevated and appreciated only when it has proper copywriting.

The copy of any ad is the salesman. Good copy creates a desire to bye and closes the sale. Once you have found a winning sales idea, dont change it. Your client may tire of it after a year or two. He sees all the ads from layout stage to proof stage to publication stage. Explain to him that when he is tired of the campaign, it it just beginning to take hold of the public.

There are some different rules to developing copy like you frequently mention the brand name and key consumer benefit: and to conclude the ad by linking back to its beginning, with a strong call to some kind of action. While second rule for developing copy is to keep the format simple, uncluttered, and straightforward.

Whenever you write a copy your aim should be only your customer not your product. If your copy appeals to emotions and solves problems. One good copy is the answer of the customers question that what is there in it for customer?

Elements Of A Good Ad

Writing ad is an art. Writing an ad is based on AIDA theory. Get Attention. Make it interesting. Let it produces desire in readers mind. Influence reader to take an action.

Attention
In the clamor and clutter of sight and sound, and the competition for the reader’s eye, ear, and heart, it’s imperative that you compete successfully for attention. There should be some element in the ad — whether it’s the headline or the illustration or the layout — that attracts the eye or ear and arouses sufficient interest to warrant attention to the message. And the copy itself must sustain that attention.

Interest
Once you’ve captured the reader’s attention you’ve got to say or show something to sustain interest, or the message will not be heard.

Desire
The ad must generate a desire to accept what you have to say about what you have to offer; to want to do business with you.

Action
The ultimate aim of an ad is to generate action on the part of the reader or listener; to cause the reader to want to do something that you want him or her to do, such as buy your service, or, in the case of professional services marketing, it might be to either generate an inquiry or accept a selling situation. On the other hand, just getting a reader to think about you in a specific way is an action, too. Thats what institutional advertising is about.

Other things to be covered in Advertisement!!

Promise of Benefit
Something in the ad should promise the reader or the listener some benefit that will accrue from accepting the ad’s premises.

Credibility.
The premises of the ad must be believable.

Persuasiveness.
The ad should be persuasive.
It should sell or generate the need for the service you offer, and project your service as superior.

Steps outlines for creating ad concept

1. Believe in your personal experience. Put yourself as a customer.
2. Learn from the experience of others
3. Write from your heart
4. Talk with the manufacturer / producer
5. Study the product
6. Review previous advertising
7. Study your competitors ads
8. Study testimonials from customers
9. Solve the problem
10. Your mind work
11. Successful idea

Outlines for writing ad effectively

1. Know your objectives.
2. Identify with their problem or need.
3. More you tell, the more you sell.
4. Measure promotional efforts
5. Be more specific
6. Write short sentences, with easy and familiar words
7. Make sure each word is exactly the right one to convey your meaning.
8. Write headline keeping reader’s interest in mind
9. Define solution and hint to reader
10. Explain the solution for the problem
11. Show the proof by specific results, testimonials and a guarantee.
12. Explain how are you different than your competitors
13. Offer free information. E.g. information packs or catalogue
14. Make title interesting
15. Put reader in hurry by offers ending date.
16. Ad should be readable and noticeable so put your logo and text clearly
17. Highlight your website, email and toll free numbers
18. Use a coupon or response device
19. Use a dashed or cut along the dotted line border on an ad
20. Use Serif or Arial in layout, as such fonts are easy to read
21. Use the present tense and the active voice

Advertising copy is successful when concept and words are matched in correct format on paper. Even color management in an ad depends on what concept or message you want to convey. Highlighting key words are necessary in ad like classifieds.

Using one full page with one word attracts more attention if word is so powerful. Sometimes ad conveys a detailed message and information too. In such case writing thousands words are necessary. There are many theories and concepts written to write good ad.

Still I believe in only one thing while creating an advertisement. Be creative as much as you can.
Advertising is not bound by any rules but selling is precondition.

Writing Impressive Essays at University

When you are studying at college and university as a student you want to be the leader in your class and gain a great mark at the end of your course. One way you are allowed to do this is by writing and submitting essays to your lecturers. You will also need to (depending on your course) complete exams, but, if you are like me then chances are an exam isnt the best use of your talent. I can always write an impressive and substantiated argument for an essay, but it seems that when I cant just nip off for a brew or go to the gym half way through my exam I become frustrated and bored. Hence I worked my hardest through writing impressive essays so that these could bolter my final grade, no matter what the topic area was on my course.

Below I have provided you with 5 easy steps that will help you write more impressive essays that you can submit with pride and know that they are going to be scored well.

Step 1 Research, research, research

If you don’t know what your subject is about, the paradigm that has been discussed in class, or what changes have evolved in a culture setting over the past few years, then you will be on the road to failure fast, when writing an essay. Essays and papers in academia are more focussed on what research you have dine and with good reason. Reading a couple of sources and then going about trying to argue a case for digital LCDs in todays market place would be pretty poor if youd only research two sources that were written a few years ago and done no analysis of the current markets needs. Research needs to be up-to-date.

Step 2 Analyze the arguments put forward

Sometimes, people tend to quickly read a section or chapter of an authors work and quickly spring into a thought process and start writing hundreds of words on an argument that they didnt fully read or understand and have thus wasted some pain staking time on writing for their essay. Look for arguments, strengths and weakness in a topic. It could be that previous research has been undertaken that was very weak and the outcomes were flawed. If another author has picked up on this, then you should center around its emphasis.

Step 3 Brainstorm

In order to write effectively you will need to have the ideas of where you want to go and what different parts are associated with what areas. Making a mind map and brainstorming ideas will allow you to concentrate of a few different things in one area and not just write a little bit about everything. Doing this will enable you to work towards a set goal and establish a cohesive argument for the reader.

Step 4 Write, write, write

Now its time to start writing your essay and actually get something down on paper. You will be clear in your mind from the previous steps about what venue or angle you will be going down. When you are writing, the body of the text that you are putting down on paper should be a series of paragraphs that focus on one certain area or key point and link from one to the next. Different sections of your essay or report should also link to one another, and it should flow logically, extending your argument to whichever avenue you have chosen to go down. Your conclusion should rap up all the information the reader has seen and should evaluate where they could go to from here, a question, or a twist in logic thinking surmised by the paper.

Step 5 Proofing and Style correction

All essays are to be written and cited following a set structure, which will be established by your college or university. There are a few different styles that are used in academia: APA, MLA, Chicago and Harvard. They all have different elements that need to be taken into account when checking over your paper and ensuring the correct style is used. Many times papers have been known to be rejected or failed because they have not referenced and styled their paper to submission guidelines this can be really frustrating to you given that you have put so much effort into the perfect essay.

You should make sure that your spelling and grammar is correct too, and be positive that it follows from start to finish. You could also have a professional ensure that you have written the perfect piece and an impressive essay by having them proofread your paper.

Writing Greeting Card Verses

Hallmark has this month celebrated its 100th birthday, having been founded by Joyce Hall from David City, Nebraska, after she latched onto a craze for postcards that had swept America in the first decade of the 20th century. Nowadays, the company is one of the worlds biggest card producers and continues to be run by Joyces grandson, Don Hall. This important birthday raises again the profile of card verse writing as a form of creative writing. Can you imagine how difficult it is to say Merry Christmas in a hundred of different ways? If this is a challenge that you feel youre interested in seizing then read on! There are opportunities for writers of greeting card verses to submit their words to large card companies; not everything is written in house. Editorial manager at Hallmark, Ruth Turner, states that she is always looking for new freelance verse writers. We have a big library of what you might call standard verse, so were looking for something a bit different: writers who have a new voice or a more quirky or interesting way of expressing themselves. At Hallmark, and the same principles apply for the majority of card manufacturers, submissions can be submitted directly through their website. Card verses for all subject matters and seasonal festivities will be accepted throughout the year, so try not to feel as if you have to write or submit a card verse that is specific to a time of the year over certain months only. As with all writing, research is of paramount importance. Louise, one of the writers at Hallmark suggests that greeting card verse writers should, go into the shops. Look at what we [Hallmark] and other companies are doing. Stand around and listen to what people say when theyre buying. If they read a card and put it back, go and look at it to see why it might have been that it didnt work for them. Once you have a greeting card verse idea in mind or you have something down on paper and you are considering submission of your writing to a card manufacturer, ask yourself a few questions first: -Would I actually send a card with this message in? -Have I used archaic rhymes? If so, is there a way that I can amend the text to avoid this rhyme? -Have I written anything backwards to make it rhyme? If so, it needs rewriting. -Have I used the first person? Cards should be written in the first person to give them that personal feel. -Is the verse specific to an event? Lovely verses can be written about specific events, such as a daughter gardening with her Dad which you may feel would work well as a focal point for a fathers day card. But other people may not relate to this event, and so specific events should be avoided in cards.
So, as we reach the festive season, take the opportunity to get your creative juices flowing and start writing some greeting card poetry! Do you need help with writing or editing your greeting card verse? Then use the professional editorial services from Words Worth Reading Ltd. Writing for Writing

Writers writing about writing may seem to be a highly conceited act. Since I am not reeaaally a writer, or at least I don’t claim myself to be one, I guess me giving tips on writing can be taken casually. Preferably with a pinch of salt. I may not have contributed much to the world of print but I do know a thing or two about being a connoisseur for writing. Apart from blogging and writing articles currently, I used to write award winning poems and short stories during my earlier days.
Overtime everyone develops a style of doing something; anything. For writing, I know I have a certain style by now, though there is way too much room for polishing up.
The initial stage is the creative process which is something that we do not need to understand. There is nothing to understand because creativity does not have to make sense.
Creativity starts with a feeling. The kind of feeling to do something on an instinct. Artists, just like writers, start off by doing a piece of work randomly. It may not make any sense for a start, but at most times it triggers off a new idea in the artist’s mind to create something creative. Same thing happens to writers, initial works may be shown the path to recycle bins but end up being useful by sparking off something of value in the writer’s mind. Probably that is why recycle bins are named as such, to be recycled. Anyway, once we get an idea, we have to grab it quickly, just like grabbing a seat in an extremely crowded bus, and hold on to it in order to use it.
The creative process may seem complex. To ease the complexity we can simply develop the good old habit of reading. Actually not can, but we should read. Unless we read, we can’t write. It is as simple as it gets.
The next simple, or maybe not so simple, task is to write frequently. As frequently as possible as much as time permits. Okay that seemed like a redundant statement but you get the point. The more we write the lesser the chances of getting a writer’s block. When I mention writer’s block, I don’t mean getting some column to write in a magazine but I am refering to a mental block in terms of writing. The more we write, the more we learn to write in a fluid manner and develop a style of our own along the way if we have not got one already.
As we continue writing, we will slowly discover our voice. When that happens, we get to know about ourselves better.
Oh and one more thing, of course the nitty gritty details like grammar and spelling errors have to be avoided. That’s right, totally avoided. For people like me *ahem*, it has become a habit long ago but that is because I made sure I was conscious of that. Proofreading is of high importance. Proofreading one more time after proofreading is of high recommendation. Most people don’t enjoy it but fortunately I do.
Speaking of which, I just got to know some time back that there is actually a job for proofreading alone. Hmm, I am seriously considering it. Anyway, if you find the above useful, try it. If you don’t, hmm, try it anyway because there is something to be gained along the way I am sure.

Writing E-books for Cash The Myth and the Reality

Writing E-books for Cash The Myth and the Reality

If you are reading this article, then you are clearly interested in writing e-books for money, or at least you have given some thought to the idea. You have also no doubt researched the idea of writing for cash on the Internet and downloaded a handful of e-books or reports telling you how to turn your writing into a source of income. Many of the e-books or reports you have read probably waxed lyrical about the hundreds of thousands of dollars that newbie and established writers are making from publishing their work on the Internet. Moreover, amongst all the hyperbole you will have come across testimonies testifying to the magic of a particular writing system. Some of these testimonies may contain an element of truth. However, what these testimonies fail to tell you is the fact that a majority of wannabe e-book writers will not make a penny from their writing, no matter how great the writing system might be. This is understandable since the promoter of the writing system wants you to buy the product. So let us dispel the myth right now: not everyone can or will earn money from writing e-books.There are several reasons why many wannabe e-book writers never cut the mustard when it comes to turning their writing into cash. The most obvious reason is the lack of effort on the part of the wannabe e-book writer to write effectively.I recently came across several e-products where the author was trying to promote him or herself as a marketing or writing guru. Each of the texts that I read had potential but sadly most of them were littered with grammar and spelling mistakes. And whilst no one is perfect when it comes to the written word, I expected something a little better from those who were promoting themselves as leaders in their field.Although not everyone can be a Hemmingway or a Stephen King, the least an author can do when they are trying to sell their writing for cash is to run a grammar and spell check over their work. Better still, they should learn a little about the art of writing before going to press. If you are serious about making money from writing e-books, then be prepared to invest time, effort and energy to improve your skills as an author. It takes practise and a willingness to learn in order to become a proficient writer. The writing process merits respect from all those who are planning to make money from publishing their work. The key to becoming a profitable e-book writer rests in your ability to entertain and to captivate the reader through eloquent prose. If the reader is distracted because of too many spelling or grammatical errors in your work, then the reader will almost certainly go elsewhere for their reading material.Once you have lost your reader because of bad spelling or grammar, then it is unlikely that he or she will come back to read the other material you have on offer. In short, to become a profitable e-book writer you must approach the task of writing as you would any other profession – with due care and attention to detail.Writing e-books, like other professions, requires an understanding of your tools.
